IRCDS – Voice of the voiceless

Integrated Rural Community Development Society (IRCDS) is a development organisation established in 1986 to facilitate community-based action among the marginalised and the poor communities in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is a value-based organisation striving towards overall socio-economic empowerment of the underprivileged sections of the region.

We encourage target populations to form self-help groups in which members can discuss their challenges and find possible solutions. The groups are provided with information on rightful entitlements and government welfare schemes and are linked with government institutions. This process of empowering target groups and linking them with government institutions makes the creation of sustainable livelihood options possible.

Women Development

Our aim is to empower women in the rural areas in Tiruvallur District in such a way that they are able to meet their financial and social needs. The means through which we are achieving this goal is by organising women in self-help groups (SHGs). We help these SHGs to access financial resources so that they can start income generating activities. Apart from the SHGs, women and their relatives can also seek help in our family counselling centre.

Children & Education

Four of our projects focus on offering children a safe environment and access to adequate schooling. We are running a government children’s home and the district level reception unit for abandoned children. We are also working with families of migrant workers to ensure that their children go to school. Our counselling scholarship mentoring programme offers children of migrant families the possibility to pursue their higher education.

Persons with Disabilites

Persons with disabilities are often excluded from many life domains. Access to public services such as education and health care is restricted. They are not participating in social events and are not involved in the decision making process on the family- and community level. To improve their situation in Tiruvallur District, we focus our attention to the five domains: health, education, livelihood, social inclusion and empowerment.

It was a great learning experience for me. The detailed session on bonded labour will be quite helpful. The session gave me a good understanding of the oppressed workers which are being exploited by giving them an advance loan. This makes me realise that we have so many opportunities to save and enrich the lives of many. Please keep up the good work.

Tulsipriya Rajkumari Indian Economic Service, Trainee, Govt. of India, 31/10/15

This has been my first visit to the organization and its operational area. I have observed that the organization has been working for the holistic development of PwDs. The success stories, individual cases and interactions with people revealed the wonderful work the organization has accomplished the disability domain. I wish all the best to the team.
