On 23 January 2026, a Drug Use Prevention Awareness and Career Guidance Programme was conducted at the Government Model Higher Secondary School, Seethanjeri, with the support of students from the Department of Social Work, Stella Maris College (Autonomous), Chennai, resource persons Sr. Shobha Kullu, Ms. Sweety G. S. R., and Ms. Rajeswari and the involvement of college faculty and staff.

Students from Stella Maris College conducted awareness sessions through puppetry, songs, dramas and short theatrical performances, highlighting the harmful effects of substance abuse and promoting education, positive life choices and career planning as protective factors.

Key topics included the social and health impacts of drug use, psycho-social causes, prevention strategies, safety measures, career pathways, and goal setting, with special emphasis on school retention and prevention of dropouts by linking education to future livelihood opportunities.

Through group activities on eight thematic topics, students expressed their learning using drawings, reflections, and chart presentations. The programme concluded with a Drug Use Prevention and Education Commitment Pledge. Around 150 students actively participated and benefited from the sessions.

The programme was facilitated by Mr. D. Vijayan, Programme Manager, IRCDS, with the support of CB Community Educators and IRCDS staff members Ms. Kavitha, Ms. Revathi, Ms. Bhavani, Ms. Rama, Ms. Thabithal, and Ms. Narmadha who played a key role in coordination and community facilitation.

A Drug Use Prevention Awareness and Skills Training Programme was organised by IRCDS, Tiruvallur, with collaborative support from Stella Maris College (Autonomous), Chennai – 600086, Department of Social Work on 19 January 2026 at the Panchayat Union Primary School, Thiruppair Panchayat, Monnavedu Middle School and surrounding villages of Poondi Block, Thiruvallur District

The entrepreneurship skills training aimed to promote self-employment and livelihood opportunities among community members. Hands-on training was provided in soap making, jewellery making and foot mat making, enabling participants to acquire practical small-enterprise skills.

Alongside this, a drug use prevention awareness programme was conducted using creative and participatory media such as puppetry, songs, slogans, street theatre and drama. These performances effectively communicated the harmful effects of substance abuse and emphasized the importance of prevention. Community members also took an oath committing to drug-free living.

The programme was led by Dr. Priya George, Head, Department of MSW, along with faculty members and 50 MSW students from Stella Maris College. From IRCDS Mr. D. Vijayan, Programme Manager and staff members Ms. V. Thabithal and Ms. Kavitha and staff members facilitated community mobilisation and coordination support.

Community members from Monnavedu Panchayat, children from Monnavedu School and residents of Thiruppair, Bangaram Pettai, Sendrayan Palayam SC Colony, and ST Colony actively participated. Through this initiative a total of 185 participants directly benefited from the awareness and skills training activities.

IRCDS has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (Deemed to be University)

As part of celebrating 40 years of dedicated service, IRCDS marked a significant milestone by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), Chennai (Deemed to be University) on 12th Jan 2026. The MoU was signed by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Uma Sekar, in the presence of Registrar Dr Senthil Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Environmental Health Engineering, Sri Ramachandra Faculty of Public Health Dr. S. Sankar, Faculty members Dr. G. Thangavel, and Dr. Vidya Shanmugam. From IRCDS, Mr. Stephen, Mrs. Preethi Titus and Mr. Vijayan were present.

This collaboration focuses on providing fieldwork and internship opportunities for SRIHER students at IRCDS, along with joint initiatives in teaching, research and development, seminars, workshops, and outreach activities, fostering knowledge sharing, networking, and interdisciplinary learning for meaningful social impact in the field of Education, Public Health, Community Development and Environmental Protection.
